This area of the Perth Hills is an excellent place to visit and has a number of wineries with growing reputations for producing fine wines such as Piesse Brook Estate, Ashley Estate Winery, Brookside Winery, Lawnbrook Winery, Hainault Winery which are all located in the Bickley Valley and Cosham Wines which is located in Carmel. Also is a must to visit is the Rose Heritage Tearooms with spectacular views overlooking picturesque gardens. This has more to see than the State's largest collection of roses. The rammed earth restaurant offers healthy lunches, devonshire tea and mouth watering cakes, all baked on the premises. Feed the Japanese Koi from the covered platform on the natural lake or plan to hold your wedding, birthday or anniversary in the beautiful gardens. Kalamunda boasts many restaurants and the visitor may choose from Indian, Chinese, Thai, Swiss and Italian plus two Pizza bars and the famous Last Drop English tavern and historical Kalamunda Hotel provide hearty pub meals and boutique beers. The Copperwood Restaurant has been established for 17 years and hosts a rustic ambience that is amalgamated with a shady and relaxed alfresco dining area open for lunch and dinner. In Bickley valley is situated the famous Chalet Rigi restaurant and the special Swiss nights, with open fires, cheese fondues and yodeling entertainment are evenings not to be missed. The Packing Shed situated in the grounds of historical Lawnbrook also located in Bickley Valley is open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and a delightful venue in both summer and winter to enjoy a perfect day dining indoors or alfresco and also to sample the Lawnbrook famous wines and home cooked meals. The decoration of the desserts and cakes by the owner and hostess, Judy Tieleman is an art form in itself. A visit to the specially constructed outdoor loos aptly named "Punch" and "Judy" will also provide a unique experience. For the adventurous what better way to view the wildflowers in Spring than from atop a camel and the Calamunda Camel Farm conduct rides of varying lengths. If you would prefer to stay with feet firmly planted on the ground, a short stretch of the Bibbulmun track could be taken and a beautiful walk starts at the end of Spring Road along part of the Bibbulmun track to Rocky pool. Best time of course is in Spring after the winter rains but even in summer it is worth the hike. The Perth observatory is located in Bickley valley and tours are conducted on a regular basis. Large groups are recommended to make a booking. For one of the wonders of the world experience the magnet force in Forrestfield which is located in the foothills. There are only two other places in the world where this unique phenomenon can be experienced. There are many other places of interest located in the Kalamunda Shire and further information on things to do and places to visit may be obtained from the Kalamunda Library on weekdays or the Kalamunda Visitor Information Centre on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Kalamunda Village Market days are held on the first Saturday of each month and held in the Central Road Mall area between Haynes Street and Mead Street and flow into the Town Square gardens. These market days have been conducted since July, 2000 and despite the inclement weather for the first three market days, are proving to be a great attraction with over 100 stall holders showcasing their homemade and homegrown goods. An extra Christmas market day with the theme "A Country Christmas" is to be held on December 23rd and an invitation to Father Christmas to attend has been accepted. A Christmas co-operative shop has recently been opened in the mall and is open from Monday - Saturday, 10.00am - 4.00pm. A great place to shop and get that last minute stocking filler. |
